Ideas
</h1>
<p>
A great movement called the Enlightenment swept France in the 18th century.
It was made up of a group of French writers and philosophers who sought to
bring about change. Instead of accepting the regime, men like Montesquieu,
Voltaire and Rousseau attacked it in their writings.
Voltaire was particularly opposed to the powerful
position of the church in France, arguing for freedom of religion.

<p>
Ideas of equality inspired the French middle class in particular to
seek an end to the privileges enjoyed by the Nobles.
In short, a growing desire for change emerged
during the Enlightenment, change that would bring down the regime.

Royal Family
</h1>
<p>
Louis XVI's Palace at Versailles, 22 kilometres southwest of Paris,
was a colossal building with hundreds of rooms housing some 5000 courtiers
and servants. Here the royal family members of nobility lived an
extravagant lifestyle feasting, hunting and gambling.
Without doubt the ordinary people presented their well,
especially when they themselves were poor and hungry.

Louis XVI's wife, Marie Antoinette, was a particularly unpopular figure.
She had a reputation for extravagance and spent huge sums of money
on expensive food, clothing and jewellery.
She was also hated because she came from Austria, France's traditional enemy.

Public Anger
</h1>
<p>
Envy of the royal family's wealth grew among the peasants
between 1787 and 1789 in particular, when bad harvests
left many of them on the verge of starvation.
The price of wheat doubled in the space of two years,
making it very difficult for many feed their families.
Food prices rose, bringing hardship to workers in the towns and cities.
In addition, unemployment was rising as French factories
struggled against the powerful competition
from fast growing British industries.
